As part of my MA in creative media I am developing a photography/zine project exploring gender representation and queer culture. I am asking participants to choose 5 items that they enjoy using to express their gender identity. Collaborative portraits with these 5 items will be taken and I am inviting participants to tell me a bit more about their experience of gender and queer culture. The work will result in a printed zine and an online exhibition.
My hope is that this project will be a chance for participants and our audience to explore gender and queer culture beyond the labels that have become part of our community. The portraits will be a snap shot of a particular moment in time, hopefully illustrating the fluidity of gender and its complex relation to other elements of lived experiences such as class, race, ability and sexuality. If you would like to get a better idea of my work in photography, you can view my portfolio here.
Key facts:
- I am looking for Brighton based participants who identify as queer
- Priority will be given to people of color, those with disabilities, working class queers and those with non-cis gender identities
- Participants can chose 3 questions from a set of 10 questions about gender and queer culture. I would like you to choose which aspects of your identity you would like to talk about and to decide for yourself what would be most meaningful to express. I will transcribe the interviews and you will receive a draft to approve before anything is published.
- Participants are invited to choose a setting for their portrait and to express their ideas and expectations for their representation. Anything within Brighton works – your home, the skate part, the beach…
- The final work will be published as a zine, an online exhibition, on social media and potentially in a gallery exhibition. Comprehensive information and consent forms will be given.
